Google Takes Over at Friendster
March 8th, 2007 by pamela
One of the original social media success stories, Friendster launched in 2002 only to be overtaken by MySpace as the most popular networking site. Friendster currently has 37 million registered users in 75 countries, but has been recently been working to increase the reliability and speed of the Friendster site, citing this as reasons for users defecting to rival sites.
Although financial terms of the deal have not been announced, according to Reuters the deal is set to run for two years and will see Google supply search functionality to the site.
According to Friendster business development VP Aaron Barnes “As a top-25 global web brand with 19m monthly unique visitors and 6bn page views per month, this agreement with Google allows Friendster to leverage the best industry platform to monetize our high-growth business.”
