Search Engines More Popular than Porn?
February 26th, 2007 by pamela
According to Hitwise research search engines accounted for 13.3% of all UK internet visits , compared with 11.5% for adult sites. Wonders never cease.
Heather Hopkins, Vice President of Research for Hitwise UK commented on the change, saying: “This marks an important point in the maturity of the internet, with mainstream consumer activities overtaking the early attractions of the internet. It indicates that search engines have become the point of entry for the web, used to navigate to specific websites and to search for products and information.”
Oh, it would be all too easy to take a cheap swipe at the maturity of internet user rather than the internet itself, but who am I to comment…
What it does show is that the internet is now less of a boy’s toy and more a mainstream lifestyle aide. It stands to reason that many of the web’s users have matured along with technology, I certainly have, and as both mature the internet was inevitably destined to provide more than visual stimulation. The range of things to do and see online is now almost endless, and while much of it isn’t exactly high brow, it is comforting to see the internet becoming a teacher as well as a toy.
