Ambergreen sponsor Twestival Edinburgh

Wednesday, 4 Feb 2009

Ambergreen are sponsoring the Twitter event of the year; Twestival Edinburgh. As our fragmented audiences grow, Twitter has seen itself grow at an alarming rate. We are very proud our involvement in this event and are working closely with many our clients to make the most of the micro blogging community.

What is Twestival

Twestival (Twitter + Festival) started in London back in September 2008.  It was created so the online Twitter community could meet the faces behind the avatars and do some good for a social cause. The first event was organised in less than two weeks, demand for the event exceeded 300 people, and raised money and collected canned food for a local homeless charity.  Everyone attending was on Twitter and received @nametags upon arrival.

Because of its success, the organiser s decided to launch it as a worldwide event, and the take up was very quick (At the moment there are over 175 cities taking part) and picked one charity to focus their attention on.  This charity is Charity:Water, founded to build wells in Ethiopia providing clean drinking water.

Each city will be responsible for determining the best way to raise money for Charity: Water. Organisers can set a ticket price at the door, request donations, coordinate a raffle, use additional sponsorship money or find a company to match donations.

On the night, everyone will be connecting through social media with Twitter and Flickr.

What is Twestival Edinburgh?

The Edinburgh twestival was one of the first confirmed twestival cities and the response has been amazing.  The first two batches of tickets sold out within hours, and the response from sponsors which money and prizes has been amazing.

The event is being held at the Hawke and Hunter, Picardy Pl, Edinburgh and will have around 200 movers and shakers from the Scottish social media scene. Music will be provided by Peter Griegson, Plum and Epic26, with Rollo The Amazing and his Wii loop machine filling the rest of the night. There will also be a raffle and auction, with some amazing prizes including a Netbook, a Flip Video and several bottles of Ardbeg whiskey.

The press coverage of the event has been amazing, with many local media outlets picking up, and the BBC will be live-tweeting from the event. The overall event has been picked up worldwide by some of the biggest news outlets for Social Media news (Mashable, Techcrunch, etc).

Ambergreen shot some Twestival video footage of the event. Were you there, check out our vox pop video responses

  • Tips on spotting Google SEO penalties

An expert has offered advice on how to identify instances where Google has penalised a website in organic search rankings.

Ann Smarty of Search Engine Journal said marketers should look out for a sudden decline in Google referral traffic or major rankings for both their overall sites and individual pages.

A penalty may also be in place if there are massive differences in rankings when searches are conducted on Google.com and via a separate database, Ms Smarty explained.

If a search for [yourdomain.com] does not bring up the website in question, Google is likely to have penalised that site, while failing to rank for a [site:yourdomain.com] search can mean that the website is in big trouble, the expert said.

"This flag is the most dangerous one: it might mean some dramatic error on your side (you might have mixed something up with Robots.txt, robots meta tags or redirects) or you might have done something really bad," she explained.

Those wishing to submit a reconsideration request to Google after being banned from the search engine will need to do so through Google Webmaster Tools. ADNFCR-1269-ID-19009100-ADNFCR

  • Site structure 'important in SEO'

Businesses looking to enhance their search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies while also meeting user needs would do well to focus on the structure of their websites, it has been suggested.

Carrie Hill of Blizzard Internet Marketing noted in a column for Search Engine Watch that implementing a clear, logical website structure will not only improve site usability but will also make it easier for search engines to crawl.

She advised using static URLs containing key identifiers as to where the web user is on the website, such as example.com/category/product/colour.

This results in a clear path so that if the user is not sure where they are on the site, they can deduce from the URL that they are on a colour page for a particular item.

Such URLs are also more likely to be indexed than dynamic ones containing lots of numbers but no keywords, Ms Hill said.

"It also leaves the user guessing about what to expect on that page and where in the overall site structure it fits," she added.

Those looking to get their website into Google News also need to follow rules on how to construct URLs.

According to Google, addresses should be unique, permanent and contain a three-digit number.ADNFCR-1269-ID-19006257-ADNFCR
